Haydn & Rollett broke ground for the first time in the Christchurch market with this $4 million warehouse and office development for Roofing Industries, a national metal roofing and cladding manufacturer.
For the Auckland construction firm, the Garden City was unknown territory, and a key task early on was to source reliable local subcontractors, as well as an experienced Christchurch-based site manager. The first was achieved through senior Haydn & Rollett people tapping their professional networks for recommendations, and by using a number of Auckland-based subcontractors with Christchurch branches that Haydn & Rollett had worked with previously.
The construction itself was straightforward, a typical precast concrete and structural steel warehouse and canopy, plus a nicely detailed 285m2 office. One unusual aspect: the client in this case provided the metal roofing, rolled in its old facilities, plus a solid recommendation for an efficient and accurate local roofer.
As an indication of the success of this first southern project, Haydn & Rollett was able to re-use 90 per cent of the subcontractors on its next one in Christchurch, a warehouse and office for Cardinal Logistics. The major lesson from the job? It always pays to tap local knowledge.
