This job for Hynds Pipe Systems Ltd’s massive new production and distribution centre at Pokeno cast Haydn & Rollett in an unfamiliar role: sub-contractor. With the client taking on responsibility for building the warehouse facilities, Haydn & Rollett was engaged to build four smaller ‘accessory’ buildings that required more detail, including a testing lab, a dispatch building, offices and amenities, and a bathroom/changing room block.

While Haydn & Rollett’s team had control over its immediate working environment, the larger site operated under the main contractor’s rules, an arrangement that required more than the usual upfront communication and understanding. Likewise, given the remote location – effectively halfway to Hamilton – there was a need to be absolutely spot-on with all planning and subcontractor communications, so that the various trades arrived on site at the right time, with the right instructions, to do the right work.
