Haydn & Rollett Property Services’ Maintenance team completed the fitout of a specialist electromagnetic compatibility room within Fisher & Paykel Appliances’ existing Penrose facility. Designed to prevent electromagnetic and radio-frequency transmission, the controlled environment supports the testing and repair of appliances.

Creating an effective shielded enclosure required a continuous conductive lining across all six faces of the room. More than 6,000 screws secured the sheet joints, while compressible gaskets maintained conductive contact throughout the enclosure.

Although straightforward in appearance, the room demanded considerable precision and coordination behind the scenes. Particular attention was required at junctions and service penetrations, where even minor gaps could compromise its performance.

The design continued to evolve during construction, requiring the team to work closely with Fisher & Paykel and the wider project team to resolve buildability requirements as they arose. Installation was also carefully sequenced within a live construction site, adapting to changing access and material-delivery constraints without compromising the integrity of the enclosure.

Initial testing recorded no mobile reception inside the completed room, indicating the shielding was performing as intended and providing Fisher & Paykel with the specialist environment required for its appliance testing and repair activities.
