Installing 30 antennas on the roof of an occupied College Hill building called for some careful manoeuvring, both above and below. The equipment would serve a US-based satellite broadband company, while three major tenants needed to keep their businesses running beneath the works.
Haydn & Rollett was involved early, working through how to build and access the rooftop structure before construction began. The scope included a new steel platform and supporting frame, with additional strengthening required as enabling works exposed more of the existing structure. A transformer upgrade and new electrical services would provide the power for the satellite equipment.
Getting everything onto the roof was a job in itself. The steelwork and antennas were installed over four phases, each involving substantial crane setups. With crews working at height and several elevated work platforms operating at once, the team had to carefully manage the space shared by construction activities, tenants and the public.
Daily contact with the tenants helped keep things moving. As the team took site measurements, prepared for the steelwork being fabricated off site and progressed through the installation, exclusion zones were adjusted to maintain access for tenants and their customers. Over five months, the rooftop gained its new structure and equipment while the businesses below remained open.
