Following the success of Cardinal Drury Stage 1, Stage 2 marks a significant leap forward in scale, automation, and operational capability. This new development transforms the Cardinal facility into one of the largest and most advanced automated warehouses in the region. The main warehouse structure rises nearly 30 metres and spans approximately 14,000 square metres, with capacity for an additional 55,000 pallets. Once fully operational, the automated systems will seamlessly transfer pallets into the Stage 1 facility for final dispatch, enhancing throughput and efficiency across the entire site. Supporting infrastructure includes a 1,500 square metre inwards goods warehouse, a breezeway and canopy and a heavy-duty container yard.
Haydn & Rollett were engaged under a design and build contract, enabling proactive risk and programme management from the outset. Ground consolidation was strategically
initiated during Stage 1, using recycled hardfill to preload the warehouse platform. This forward-thinking approach allowed construction of Stage 2 to begin immediately after Stage 1 completion in late 2023, targeting an April 2025 delivery. Key structural features include 17-metre-high precast concrete panels and a 400mm-thick warehouse floor slab specifically engineered for the needs of the automation.
Thanks to a combination of meticulous planning, robust quality management, favourable weather conditions, and a highly motivated team of subcontractors, the project was completed ahead of schedule in March 2025. The experience gained from Stage 1’s ultra-high stud automated warehouse was instrumental in the seamless execution of Stage 2. This development not only reinforces Cardinal’s leadership in automated logistics but also sets a new benchmark for industrial construction and operational excellence.
