Located on a greenfields site at Christchurch’s western edge, this recently completed warehouse and office represents an expansion of Cardinal Logistics’ operations in the South Island. Comprising 14,000m2 on a 2.65ha site, with extensive covered canopy areas, the company’s new mainland hub is four times larger than its former Christchurch facility.

Importantly, it is elegant as well as functional, incorporating several architectural features, along with energy efficiency measures such as sensors for lights and highly thermally efficient glass. To comply with the covenants of the Waterloo Business Park, the mass of the warehouse wall has been broken up by the addition of a series of fins, which also help to disguise the downpipes.

As well, the stylish 200m2 office is enhanced by curtain wall glazing and exposed aggregate feature panels. The site was extensively landscaped with flaxes, grasses and trees to further soften the building’s appearance.

While distinct in design terms from the Wiri warehouse built by Haydn & Rollett for the same client, the Christchurch facility incorporates a number of features that proved successful in Auckland. In addition, Cardinal Logistics’ staff were closely consulted about the layout and look of the office space.

Looking ahead, the building has been designed to incorporate future expansion, should extra warehousing capacity be required.
