Architectus designed this modern Sports Pavilion at Auckland Grammar School to replace an older timber pavilion that wasn't meeting the school's needs. The pavilion includes two squash courts with adjoining change facilities, together with a large function room, commercial kitchen and extensive viewing decks that look over the sports fields.

The modernist lines of the building demanded a high level of finish and attention to detail in the construction and finishing. Haydn & Rollett were chosen as the contractors for their reputation to deliver this level of finish while also working within the constraints of the functioning, busy school environment.

Haydn & Rollett demolished the existing pavilion then undertook a major excavation allowing the building to hunker into the terraced hill with usable space on the lower level. Significant and unanticipated rock was struck in the excavation, which added pressure to the already tightly programmed build.

Working around mature trees and in the middle of school term limited the space Haydn & Rollett had to work with. The level of architectural detail required - particularly in the choice of honed blockwork as a cladding material - provided further challenges for the contractors. Haydn & Rollett worked closely with the school to minimise disruption while ensuring the brick suppliers delivered the consistency required. Success with this project was seen in the team approach - drawing together suppliers, subcontractors, consultants and client to create the best possible result. As testament to the level of design and construction, the Sports Pavilion won an Auckland Architecture Award in 2008.
