An arrestingly sleek profile and gleaming surfaces – we’re not talking here about the Alfa Romeos, Fiats and other high-end vehicles displayed in the new Andrew Simms’ dealership on the North Shore, but the building itself, which was completed by Haydn & Rollett in 2023. Designed by Woodhams Miekle Zhan Architects, the flagship showroom and service workshop has raised the bar for commercial premises on Wairau Road with its eye-catching angular form (enhanced by an extremely low profile roof), extensive glazing and impeccable detailing.

The existing 1950s building has had a complete overhaul with all-new glazing and roofing, the replacement of timber purlins with steel ones, and a high gloss epoxy coated floor.

The rest of the project – the showroom itself, along with two levels of sales offices and staff facilities – was a new build. Here the challenges included getting all the necessary services and guttering into that very fine structural steel roof, and procuring key elements such as Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) and Luxalon metal ceiling panels from overseas. In addition, the client was adamant the expansive concrete showroom floor had to be worthy of the vehicles on display. Working closely with subcontractors Conslab, the project team has produced a honed concrete surface that is not only free of cracks, it is immaculate.
