Sited at Red Beach, north of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Metlifecare’s Hibiscus Coast retirement village boasts a “country club” atmosphere. That said, its common area was starting to look a little dated by last year, when Haydn & Rollett was engaged on a new fitout – although ‘fitout’ doesn’t quite capture the scale of the overhaul. Essentially, part of the common area was demolished and rebuilt. Behind the scenes, services such as sprinklers, plumbing, electrical and lighting were redone. Out front, there were new wall finishes, including imported wallpapers, along with fresh carpet and vinyl, all carefully chosen to match the existing surroundings.

Meanwhile, the bar and serving areas were completely revamped. Haydn & Rollett’s joiners fabricated bespoke benchtops, including one five-metre long run of stone with waterfall ends that makes quite a statement. The team also created an appealing baffle beam ceiling and built new timber joinery.

The village numbers more than 350 elderly residents, and that created some obvious health and safety concerns, requiring clear communication with residents and village management. In the event, everyone was kept happy, and the village can now rightly claim to have a common area befitting a country club.
